[Resolved]  Hyundai / Santro — Premature Crankshaft Failure

Address:Chennai, Tamil Nadu

I own a Santro purchased in June 2006 from the direct sales office Hyundai Motor Plaza Chennai India and serviced it there throughout. I have taken the car to HMP for service on 9th Dec since I had a slow acceleration issue, the advice from the service adviser was that the fuel tank and injectors need to be cleaned with an estimate of INR 1500/-. On 10th when i called the adviser back, he gave me the shock of the life that the Crankshaft has to be replaced with a costs more than 15000/- (10 times the estimate). The car though is 4.5 years old, I am the only user and is very sparingly used and has run only 25000 Kms.
Engine being the sturdiest and the most reliable equipment in a car can not give up or develop such snags at such an early phase of cars life (25000 kMS). The requirement to undertake major repairs of this order on engine in such a short span is a clear indication of premature material failure/ lapses in quality assurance coverage during production of the engine.
I had some research and this it the relevant posts on this

The premature crankshaft problem looks like an issue with this model from Hyundai. I have been disputing this with the customer care team, but till date I dont have other updates from the service team and I end up talking to one or other members of Hyundai with out any decision. They are deaf to the fact that a crankshaft failue at 25000 kms and eager to find facts to make me responsible, it was so rediculing when the service manager of HMP told me that I did not do one of the services in 6 months and hence this could be a failure reason :( ... if this is the case then 80% of our vehicles in the road should be in the workshops for repairing crank.
Pathetic customer relationship as well. More than 10 days and they havent started working on this. My stand is clear that Hyundai should pay for the repair, Any one with similar experience?

D.P HYUNDAI — change of parts

Well , how to start ….. , A consumer needs a forum for grievances so that all are aware of things happening around us, when the level of tolerance crosses limits than we need to discuss it so that it might not happen again. Before starting my story I would like to inform that till now this news travels through this medium only and very soon it may take new shapes .
Story goes like this . I’m owner of Hyundai verna & yesterday i.e on 8th of October the incident took place at EXCLUSIVE HYUNDAI SHOWROOM at ABOHAR registered as DP HYUNDAI. after I got my gate pass after gap of two days for the starting problem and which they got fixed and actual thing happened when I drove my car out of the showroom boundary after submitting the gate pass and making payments , very soon I realized that my car is not running properly and it’s loosing its pick up so at that time my brain worked n within no time I was able to locate that it was a sensor problem to be specific it a mapping sensor located in a air filter just because I had experienced same problems five months back and paid 14 grands for replacing it with a new one from DP HYUNDAI ABOHAR only. and now they have intentionally changed it with an dysfunctional sensor of another verna car which belongs to the owner of dp Hyundai so quickly I drove back to showroom and started yelling at them about the cheat and told them that I’m pretty sure about this .i asked them to show serial no. of mapping sensor of owner’s verna to match it with invoice details of my purchase that is few months back then hearing to my strong point the mob started gathering n suddenly a mechanic comes with an explanation that it was his mistake n he wanted to check that was it actually sensor problem with owner’s verna n within flash of seconds they changed the respective sensors and again tried to convince me that it was just a mistake but as every one knows it was intentional n planned ,why does the mechanic installs dysfunctional sensor in my car , which is not justifiable n now I have lost my faith in Hyundai and my car is making a lot of noises accompanied my missing and bubbling , now if I come up with next plan of action i.e contacting media and Hyundai corporate office or sue them after discussing it with my lawyer who is actually engaged in drafting of documents then owner will fire employees that are not that guilty coz this act was framed only on the instruction of the owner. Hence I feel like filing a complaint against them at Hyundai requesting an enquiry into the matter by getting my car checked at any other authorized Hyundai dealers as I suspect more fraud from there side and verify that parts have been changed after all while buying a car I TRUSTED HYUNDAI , NOT D.P ……….
I have a Santro Xing Car purchased in June'2006. I have been using it sparing and till date has run only 24000 KMs. Only yesterday I have been informed by the service engineer about the crankshaft issue leading to pick-up problems. I have been advised a overall expenses of 18-20k Rs. I am not sure why there are multiple problems that are being highlighted by the Santro users especially on such costly parts like crankshafts. I think Hyundai needs to seriously review their QC checks on quality of raw material purchased and also incase there are issues identifed on a faulty product, what do they do to recall the cars and change these parts 'on their own expense' to maintain a great customer experience.
I have faced the similarproblm recently. Crank Shaft failed at 40, 000 Kms. I have Dec, 2004 Mode. My uage is very light and is driven by a single person. I am getting a repair estimate of some Rs30, 000.

Failure of crank shaft is related to usage of car. As I read from reviews Hyundai cars are highly susceptible to huge damage if timing belt or crank shaft is not replaced in time. I read from Hyundai forums that Hyundai engines are of interference type and if crank shafts fail they can severly damage engines.

We need to file acomplaintin Supreme Court to ban Hyundai from doing buisness in India. Hyndia has pushed bad models in India at agressive pace via promotional offers.

Go with trusted car players in market who have been in buisness for long.
Now it's my turn, when I went to servicing center I was assured about the normal charges against some repair to remove mild but un-wanted noise.
3 days later I was called up and told -- I need to get crank shaft replaced and charge would be 23, 000/- extra.
I am fully surprised as there is absolutely no issue with car run and have used car for just 40, 000 km -- why this repair is needed.
Specially single handed car -- running in normal roads of Bangalore. I am really not sure if this is the real issue or just goo[censored]p.
Same happens with me there is an accelaration problem and mild sound coming, my car is 2009 model and just used 36000 kms, they are saying crankshaft is gone and it will cost 25000, when I ask how this happened they are saying it is due to vehicle is taking load or due to lot of gear shifting, how colud due to weight of one person crankshaft will be goan, I showed my vehicle to private mechanice, he said there is no engine problem, there are three sensors "crankshaft position sensor " "camshaft position sensor" and "vehicle speed sensor" might be one of these are gone due to this also this problem occure. Guys in these hyundai service centre engineers working there get commision for the stuff they sell, due to this they ask us to replace these expensive parts so that they can get bigger cut.
Hi i faced the similar problem with my santro XP model january 2005.My car stopped running
at all and i barely manage to reach upto a workshop (Not hyundai) AAftertwo days they people
done it with replacing a sensor which controls timing of engine (as i m told i dont know much of this stuff)
Now the car is running fine.Cost me arround Rs2400/-
Same issue happens to me now Pawan Hyundai GZB saying crankshaft need to replace which cost 22000Rs my car just used 42000 Kms.definately Hyundai not using the QC for the supplied parts even they become deaf and dump when I asked this should be bear by Hyundai. Can Consumer Court help on this?plz share your thoughts.
I purchased my hyundai Santro GLS car in 2008 in Bangalore. Till date, my car was maintained in Hyundai showroom only and it is single hand driven (by me only). With all that, at 36000 kms, due to complaint of poor pick up, I went to show room. They told that it is due to crank shaft problem and it needs replacement, Since, they have upgraded the design of crank shaft, they have to change fuel pump and other items though they do not have any problem at all. Their estimate is Rs 40000/-.

When there is a design fault, Hyundai should do the work free of cost for the affected customers. I found this is the fate of many owners of Santro cars. Will Hybdai look into this issue, if they are really for customers?
I have similar experience. I purchased my Santro Xing GLS in 2007 Nov. I used to service my vehicle regularly. Few days after 50KM service, I was finding that my vehicle pickup has gone down drastically. Initially I felt it was my feeling, but later I was finding difficult to climb the normal up/downs in the road. During the 60KM service I mentioned this complaint to the Service station in Kochi, they told me that its a regular issue with Santro models and many people faced this problem at 25-30K range; but you are lucky to have this problem now. And they mentioned that the cost of repairing will be to the tune of 25-30K - Rs. 19-20K for the Kit and 8-10K for the services.

First of all if its a general complaint, why Hyundai not taken any action? At least they should have offered the Kit at 50% discount and made the services charges free so that its not that painful for the customers! I dont know whether this forum can do something, but I am not loosing my hope.

My second query to the friends here, once we replace this Cranck shaft assembly, whether the issue will be resolved permanently? Please share your comments here. Thanks in advance. I have no option but to repair it, but I want some assurances.

Best regards and thanks.

Hi,

I have a question. This is Hyundai 2005 purchased travelled around 1, 00, 000 kms till date. We had the suspension replaced and serviced it only 2 months back. One day while i was at the signal the car suddenly stopped and i called the (talvar hyundai, hyd )guys where they came and picked it up. For two days they give me no updates where i repeatedly call them. Third day the advisor calls up and says it might be a minor bolt problem costing 5-7k or you will have to replace the whole crank shaft 20-30k. Later i take my dad and went to that place, we asked for the advisor and they say he has not even come to the garage that day. Later some other abijith person accompanies us and randomly starts asking about replacing the whole engine and stuff. Is it possible with the breakage of the crank shaft the engine will encounter problem?
