Nilgiris — Refused to accept a new 500 rupee note

I went to a nilgirs super market, located at ramapuram, chennai.

When i gave them a new 500 rupee note that i just took from the atm, the girl at the billing counter gave a shocking reply that they will not accept any notes if there is any text written on it.

When i asked why, they were clueless and kept saying the same thing. It is obvious they have been instructed to do so. But why torture the customers? Is it not illegal to reject a legally valid currency?. There is no rule passed by the rbi to reject currency just because there is a text written on it.
