I am a NRI. I tried opening a Zerodha account online. It's only after I made the payment and moving to the next page to sign the declaration, I realised that it is only for residents. As I am a NRI, I did not proceed further and raised a ticket instantly seeking help to get the refund back. I promptly received a call from Zerodha sales team. A person name Deepak spoke and said I can still proceed and create the account. When questioned about the legality of me holding a resident account despite being a NRI, he said students who usually go abroad do open ordinary accounts and use it even after their residential status becomes NRI. I asked him to clarify and he said he will confirm and if that doesn't work, he will initiate the refund. He later sent a link which explains that the onus is on the customer. I would see this as marketing by deception given the recommendation from Zerodha sales person to open a normal account despite being a NRI. I am more than happy for Zerodha to check our conversation if they have recorded the same. He called again today on my request and I explained I would rather take the refund. He then said as per company rules it is not refundable. I find this unfair because Zerodha is charging me for a service that they have not provided. I have not opened the account yet. Deepak said I can raise a ticket again but I will get the same response from Zerodha team. I wanted to try again before I formally raise it with the ombudsman and regulatory departments. It's not about the 200 rupees money. It's about the unfairness that I am unable to accept. I hope to have a positive response back from you.
