Three from city among bogus shopping portal’s victims
Nagpur: A shopping portal was selling electronics at a big concession last month and within the first two days, its sales touched Rs1 crore. People from all over the country bought devices from the portal over the next few days, but none of them got what they shopped for. A few of them who were from the city have now approached the police. Meanwhile, a Mumbai-based customer has already tracked down the owner of the website, and got back his money.
The portal called www.big2sale.com was asking the customers to make payments through an online payment gateway called PayNimo. Swapnil Zade, Kamlesh Thakre and Sachin Barbate from the city had placed an order for mobile phones each costing around Rs6, 000 on February 8. They were told that the deliveries would be made in a week's time.
"Since we didn't get the phones by that time, we called the customer care number provided on the website. The number had been switched off by then. When we checked the website to make an e-mail complaint, we saw that it had been taken down as well. Therefore, we filed a complaint with the Nandanwan police on February 21, " said Zade. Subsequently, the website did come up again but currently only the complaints page is visible on it.
The complaint has been forwarded to the cyber cell of the city police. Talking to TOI about the investigation, an official said, "Since the domain has been deactivated, we have asked the service provider for giving us the IP lock which will lead us to the person who owns the website."
This modus operandi of cheating people is becoming more common these days, which has caused much concern for activists. "This website was taken down as soon as the person owning it made a good profit. The same guy can now set up another website, make a considerable profit, shut it down and repeat. This is possible for him because of there being no restrictions on online activity. It is the government's responsibility to protect the citizens from such fraudsters. They have formulated the IT Act, but the IT secretariats in states are not very responsive to complaints made to them, " said cyber law activist Mahendra Limaye. He believes that the government needs to get ready for a future that is obviously moving towards the digital world.
Meanwhile, Karunanidhi Kanan of Mumbai has not only been able to track down the owner but also retrieve his and his friend Saurabh Mundra's money. "The fact that I did not get a text after successful payment for the order I placed nor was I getting any status report on the shipping. I called the customer care and asked for the transaction id and other details of the company. Within two weeks, I had tracked the guy down. In the next week, I had got back my money, " he said. He has the contact details and address of the Delhi-based person who owns the website.
Officials from the city cyber cell department have already been told about this. However, they seem to be hesitant to ask Kanan for help, saying they would rather go through the case the official way.
