My husband called me the other morning to tell me that his brother won a sweepstakes through Golf Digest Magazine, which he subsribes to. $29,000!
My first comment was, "He better make sure it's not a scam." I'm so pessimistic, huh?
They sent him a $2,900 check for good faith and promised the rest once they verified his information. Nothing was said about cashing the check and sending them the cash back, etc...like the usual scams of this nature. So, of course it looks legit. Plus, everyone at his office, including my husband, looked the check and letter over and everyone agreed it looked real. He later went to the bank to deposit the check and (surprise, surprise) it's not a real check. It wasn't even endorsed!
This is a little scary because most of the scams like this are from foreigners and you can pretty much tell (from the broken English) that it's fake. This one claimed to be from a REAL magazine that my brother in law actually subscribes to.
There was a United States phone number listed in the letter, so he called and left a very evil message. Like anyone's going to call him back.
