Jawahar Nagar in Delhi - 110007, near the Delhi University has become an area full of residential houses which are operating as 'hostels' for students.
Since this area has not been officially declared as a 'commercial' area, the hostels are hence operating illegally. This is leading to many many problems of law and order, security and crime. For example, there are regular incidences of fights and injury amongst students, which go unreported or are hushed up, since the hostels are illegal. It has been reported that there have also been students deaths.
Further, the hostels do not give electricity and water at commercial rates, thereby depriving the MCD of revenue.
It is best to regularise these hostels by declaring the area as mixed land use/commercial (its marked as 'special area' in master plan, as it was built prior to 1962 - and even earlier than 1947). This will benifit the MCD, the community and the students. Was this information helpful? |
