Visited the hospital for consultation. The doctor fees was stated as Rs. 550 but when I took the receipt from the reception, I was asked to pay Rs. 650. On asking why the extra Rs.100, it was informed that the Rs. 100 is added as Registration Fees for the hospital for every new patient.
When asked to justify the need of registering the patient they told it is mandatory and if any issues either speak to the personal incharge or else if not ready to pay we wouldn't be able to meet the doctor. Since I had traveled too far to visit the doctor, I paid the charges and went to meet the Personal Incharge who could help me understand the importance of Registration.
To my surprise here are few things he told:
a. It would help me revisit the doctor without any charge for next 7 days (by default this is valid for any doctor across the country and not only 7 days but 15 days) which only is done for 1% of the patients. So should everyone pay for it - INVALID
b. The charge is for sharing the reports of the tests we get it done from the hospital. So he meant, it is the patient who bears the cost of charges and the pages used to print the report too. So what if I am not getting any tests done there and hence no report for me - INVALID
c. The charge is to take care of the employees helping us generate the receipt at the reception, that means we need to bear the cost of the receptionist too - INVALID
d. The charge is to pay the hospital staff which is at our services, in my case I didn't need one - INVALID
When confronted that why it was not mentioned in any hospital rule books, he told it is not and is mandatory to pay. If not willing to pay, we can go and visit the doctor at some other place. Apart from that when tried explaining that this is illegal to charge unwanted fees, he told we work like this as other bigger hospitals also work like this. They have to take care of the expenses of the hospitals and Registration fees is one of the modes to meet it.
When tried to explain that there can be a complain raised for this, he proudly said, no worries and go ahead with it.
Request this to be taken proper actions against any such Unwanted charges and fees from the patients just to earn more from the patients. This is indirectly a very big scam going on in Private Hospitals which results in patients to shell out more money which has no proper sense.
