State Bank Of India [SBI] — mandatory insurance when opening bank account

I opened a savings bank account in sbi bank few months ago... It was in nemmara branch in kerala.
When i was going through the appication process a extra insurance form was given to me. I asked them is this insurance mandatory. And they said it is mandatory if you wish to open accout in the bank.
The insurance takes 200 from my account.
And recently i found out this insurance was not at all mandatory and that i was scamed.
