Apple is known for its quality products, be it macbook or iphones. Quality at its best; apple spends millions of $ in r&d to achieve these quality standards in their products. Thatâs the reason why they sell their products at least 2-3 times costlier than their peers in the industry. Since their products are extremely robust; it justifies their pricing strategy. Value for money. Agreed!
But is appleâs business model great? Ahh. No, it is the most fraudulent company on the earth which ever existed. Just have a look at their business model, you buy say iphone 5s when it is launched at a price which is way beyond the similar products from industry peers. Now that you have paid huge premium on the iphone 5s, you would expect it to last forever. Yes! After all its an apple product known for their quality and robustness. Since you have paid 2-3 times premium than peers products you would at least expect the apple product to last minimum 2-3 times life than what peerâs product would have lasted. But no! Here is catch, whenever apple launches a new iphone model, they want their entire customer base to shift to new one, not based on its new features or individual choice but by force. So, what is this force?; after few months on new model launch apple de-activates old models by something called as âkill switchâ. Surprisingly kill switch was marketed as protection from theft meaning whenever someone steals your iphone, device will become inactive if you activate the kill switch in it. So, that the thief cannot sell it in the grey market and make some living out of the efforts he/she has put in stealing the iphone. But the reality is apple uses this kill switch technology to forcefully migrate its customers to buy their newly launched model. Wait a minute, where is the value for money on iphone 5s now, it lasted only 2-3 years. Because apple started deactivating its older generation iphones one by one. Whereas peerâs products generally last for same time periods if not more unless you damage them physically.
Apple can run this kind of # business model in usa and developed nations at least not in india. I challenge apple to increase their footprint/share of demand in india in next 5 years.
Indian customers are very sensitive to value for money whether you sell them a pin or an aeroplane.
