Background
Citibank NRE/NRO account had been opened back in 2005 / 2006 and was open due to 'Zero account balance maintenance for life'. This account was used periodically on as and when required basis.
In Nov 2015, I received an email to update KYC documents and was sent straight away to Indian address. I receive confirmation on 4th Dec 2015 that KYC details have been updated.
Even after that, I have been received account closer email notices. I believe that it was just a glitch in Citibank system and these mails are auto generated ( if I don't update KYC than Citi bank will close the account)
Current situation
On 28th Dec, 2015, Citibank actually closed both the accounts due to 'No Transection in account for more than 2 years'
Despite my best efforts to communicate with Citibank, I have not received any proper explanation or result.
Interpretation of the situation
Being an NRI, is it fair to close the account on 2 years No transaction basis?
Both NRE/NRO accounts do have funds and generate periodic interest as well.
It shall be completely my wish, when and how I shall use my funds
Other banks put NRE/NRO accounts in Dormant if not been used for long time and ask identity proof to re-activate but do not closed the account after some email notices
The main reason to closed the account, I believe is, The account doesn't require any minimum balance maintenance.
Expected Actions from CitiBank
Citibank shall provide an explanation regarding Un-fair policy for closing NRE / NRO account
Re-activate accounts with same previous terms and conditions
