Greetings. My deep condolence for the Dana Air crash to the Nigerians as well as the Dana Airlines and the Dana Management.
I am an ex-employee of Dana Group and worked for more than 4 years in dana group. And currently working in UAE. The company (Dana Group) is an excellent company. The top management like the Chairman and the MD and their family are very good and some board of Directors too. And honestly, to me the Hathiramani family members are like the God. The company also gives a good job environment to its employees and off course in salary part also they are better compare to other Indian companies.
But the problem is the middle management. They are not giving the accurate picture to the top management ( to the chairman and to MDs). They involved in to make secure of their own chairs (own position), own employment promotions and own bank balance. They are doing such type funny and frustrated works in order to get appraisal by the top level. Because of this many experience expats were left them. Although every body has the pride to work with Dana group, because of these some middle management staffs they cant able to work. One among it is Mr. XXX ( i dont want to disclose any body's name), who holds the post of HR head now.
Regarding the passport keeping issue, all most all the companies in Nigeria keeps the original passport for the purpose of immigration. Although it is illegal in term of immigration law, but some how this practice is secure for either side. As the parent company gives to their expat staffs much responsibility and spends money in bulk for ticketing, visa and other immigration formalities and some on family status issues who are with their family. To my experience some Indian expats, who used to hold their passport earlier in past, left the country without intimation to the company, so the companies now keeping the passport in their own custody. And if any employee keeps the passport there are chance of loss as the there are still robbery cases going on in Nigeria frequently. And while going to India either on emergency ground or normal period the Dana group use to release their passport without any problem on genuine cases.
The real problem is keeping of original documents like your original credentials. After you join in any Nigerian company your credential needs to be verify once of the authentication of your highest degree educational certificate. But Dana middle management and HR dept are keeping it till you return ( until you complete your contracts in normal), where as the photocopy can only work after it verified once by the Nigerian government. They will tell you only at the time of issuing Ticket and STR visa while joining that your educational testimonies will be kept with them for stamping issues, which is a fake clause and illegal.
If you complete your full contract you can request them for the release of the certificate, now its the mercy of HR dept to release your original certificate.
But by chance you are not able to complete the contract by any means then no way you can get your original certificates, untill you will pay them with their any calculated money in any means what ever correct or wrong they calculates without any question mark. If you question them and or beg them for proper calculation you will be given threaten of legal. And no communication will be made.
To me i am lucky, that i have finished my contract and got another better opening in Dubai, hence i requested my credentials through my SGM to HR and got the certificates. Dana Group still keeps the original certificates of many of my friends (who were my ex-colloquies at Dana group) with no reason or of any un usual reason. The middle management has calculated a huge amount of Outstanding against their exit from Dana. To some, even they have not transferred Overseas salary for 3-4 months but in the exit calculation they are claiming for the same that they have been paid for the months. Because of this attitude of some of middle management employees many Indian ex employes of Dana still struggling and suffering for their carrier without the certificates.
If the top management can put sharp eye on this may be the middle management will act more practically in all the respect without making any eye catching works. Atleast some ex-employs and their family can survive and pray for the better growth of the company and its top management.
The company is very good towards its employees, some Indians expats are working more than 15 years. Many are living in Nigeria even with their family. Some of them re-joined Dana group and working very efficiently and enjoying the job at Dana group. Dana group is also socially involved for the betterment of Nigerians. And it has a good contribution to the nigerian economy.
Many Indians also improved their social and economic standard by working with Dana Group.
As this is an open thread, and all are free to share their own feeling. And as some of my friends are still suffering because of the certificate issue i felt to express my view.
