My father Dr Sudhir Kumar Dhir has been on dialysis since last 5+ years at fortis hospital mohali. UHID 6827324
On 07/02/2022 the dialysis machine was supposed to remove 1500 ml of fluid in 3.5 hours. At the end of 1 hr the blood pressure fell to an alarmingly low of 60/30 mm hg. On complaining of dizziness, intravenous fluids were started. But even after 800 ml of normal saline infusion the blood pressure did not rise and dialysis had to be closed immediately.
After closure on checking the post dialysis weight it showed removal of 3000 ml of fluid which was shocking. Alhough on screen it displayed 380 ml fluid removed but the machine had malfunctioned and it had removed 3800 ml in 1 hour which resulted in sudden fall in blood pressure and pre closure of dialysis. It was for the alertness of my father that he could inform the staff just before falling unconcious that he was feeling dizzy and the staff could start intravenous fluids. If it were any other patient perhaps it could have resulted in a precious life loss at the hands of a faulty dialysis machine.
Two days before on 05/02/22 also during dialysis, the machine suddenly stopped in between and it had to be replaced with another machine while the blood was still in the tubes. We did not report it as somehow the dialysis was completed by changing the machine in the midway.
However today's incident has no excuse as it could have been fatal. So I would request you to look into the matter so that the faulty dialysis machines are replaced or repaired before they result in any further casuality.
